Ping and traceroute are the first tools you reach for when something cannot be reached. Ping tells you whether a destination answers; traceroute tells you where along the path packets stop. Used together, and with the extended options IOS offers, they let you narrow a failure down to a specific router or link instead of guessing, and the CCNA exam expects you to read their output fluently.
