An access control list (ACL) is an ordered list of permit and deny statements, called access control entries (ACEs), that a router uses to filter packets. Applied to an interface in a direction, it decides whether each packet passes. ACLs are also used to select traffic for other features, such as NAT (Network Address Translation), VTY access and QoS (quality of service), so reading them correctly matters well beyond firewalling.
