To understand controller-based networking, you first need the idea of planes: the logical jobs a network device performs. Separating these jobs, and moving some of them to a central controller, is the core idea behind SDN (software-defined networking). The CCNA expects you to classify functions by plane and to know which interfaces a controller uses in each direction.
