Microsoft Entra ID, formerly called Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), is Microsoft's cloud-based identity and access management (IAM) service. It stores users, groups and applications, and it handles sign-in to Azure, Microsoft 365 and thousands of other software-as-a-service (SaaS) applications. Each organization gets its own Entra tenant, a dedicated instance of the directory, and every Azure subscription trusts exactly one tenant for its identities. Entra ID provides authentication, single sign-on, application management, device registration and identity protection features such as detecting risky sign-ins. Because identity is the control plane for the cloud, it is often called the new security perimeter.
