The Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) hands out IP addresses and settings so you don't configure each client by hand. A client gets a lease through four messages, often remembered as DORA: Discover (a broadcast asking for any DHCP server), Offer, Request and Acknowledge. Because Discover is a broadcast, it normally stays on the local subnet, which matters when you design where servers live.
