An Azure virtual network (VNet) is your private network in Azure. When you create it, you give it one or more address spaces written in CIDR (Classless Inter-Domain Routing) notation, such as 10.20.0.0/16, normally from the private ranges defined in RFC 1918 (10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12 and 192.168.0.0/16). You then carve that space into subnets, such as 10.20.1.0/24 for servers and 10.20.2.0/24 for management. Every VM network interface card (NIC) lives in one subnet.
