Virtual network peering connects two virtual networks (VNets) so resources in them communicate using private IP addresses, as if they were one network. Traffic travels over the Microsoft backbone, never the public internet, with low latency and no gateway in the path. Peering VNets in the same region is regional peering; peering VNets in different regions is global peering, which works the same way. VNets can be in different subscriptions, and even in different Microsoft Entra tenants when the administrator has permissions on both sides. Peering is the building block of hub-and-spoke networks.
