Backup protects data so you can restore it later; disaster recovery keeps whole workloads running when a region or site fails. Azure Site Recovery (ASR) continuously replicates virtual machines (VMs) to a secondary location so you can fail over to it with a recovery point objective (RPO, how much data you can lose) of minutes and a recovery time objective (RTO, how long recovery takes) that depends mostly on how fast VMs start. ASR supports Azure VMs replicating to another Azure region, and on-premises Hyper-V, VMware and physical servers replicating to Azure.
