When many servers need to read and write the same files through a normal file system interface, with directories, file locking and permissions, you need a shared file system. AWS offers Amazon Elastic File System (EFS) and the Amazon FSx family, and the exam decides between them by protocol, operating system and performance profile. Getting this right early saves painful migrations later, because applications are written to expect a particular protocol.
