Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) scales to huge request rates automatically, but knowing how it scales lets you design around the limits instead of discovering them in production. S3 supports at least 3,500 PUT, COPY, POST or DELETE requests and 5,500 GET or HEAD requests per second per prefix in a bucket. A prefix is the part of the object key before the object name, such as logs/2026/09/ in logs/2026/09/app.log. There is no limit on the number of prefixes, so spreading requests across many prefixes multiplies the achievable rate: ten prefixes can support roughly ten times the requests of one.
