Containers package an application with its dependencies so it runs the same way on a laptop, in testing and in production. They start in seconds and pack densely onto hosts, which makes them a natural fit for microservices. On AWS you make two separate choices: an orchestrator, which schedules, restarts and connects containers, and a capacity model, which decides where they actually run. Container images are usually stored in Amazon Elastic Container Registry (ECR), a private registry integrated with IAM that can scan images for vulnerabilities and replicate them across Regions and accounts.
