AWS CloudFormation is AWS's infrastructure as code service: you describe resources in a template (YAML or JSON), and CloudFormation creates, updates and deletes them together as a stack, in the right order, rolling back if something fails. SAM and the CDK both produce CloudFormation in the end, so its concepts appear throughout the exam.
