Many apps read configuration from environment variables and you may not want to change code to call the Key Vault SDK. Key Vault references let the platform fetch a secret from Key Vault and present it to your app as an ordinary app setting or secret. The value never appears in the app's configuration, source control or deployment templates; only a pointer does.
