Support technicians increasingly meet Macs, and the exam checks that you can do everyday tasks on them and map them to what you already know from Windows. Start with software. The simplest source is the App Store, which installs, updates and removes vetted apps tied to the user's Apple ID. Outside the store, apps usually arrive as a .dmg (disk image) file: double-click it to mount it like a virtual drive, drag the .app into the Applications folder, then eject the image. A .app is actually a folder-like bundle containing the program and its resources. A .pkg is an installer package that runs a step-by-step wizard and can place files in several system locations; it is used when an app needs drivers, background services or components beyond a single bundle.
