Storage problems deserve urgent attention because the drive holds the user's data. The first rule whenever a drive shows signs of trouble is to back up the data immediately, while you still can. Only then diagnose and repair. Many storage symptoms get worse with use, so every extra hour of running a failing drive risks losing more files. Clicking or grinding noises come from HDDs (hard disk drives), which have spinning platters and moving read/write heads. A repeated click, sometimes called the click of death, usually means the heads cannot read the platters properly, and grinding can mean physical contact that is destroying the surface. These are signs of imminent mechanical failure. Stop using the drive as soon as possible, copy critical data off it, and replace it. If it has already failed and the data is irreplaceable, a professional data recovery service may help; do not open the drive yourself, because dust ruins platters. SSDs (solid-state drives) have no moving parts and do not click, though they can fail suddenly or become read-only near the end of their life.
