A hypervisor, also called a virtual machine monitor (VMM), is the software that creates and runs virtual machines. It sits between the physical hardware and the guest operating systems, gives each VM its share of CPU time, memory, storage and network access, and keeps the VMs isolated from each other. Because it controls every guest on the host, it is also the most important piece of software to keep patched and secured. The exam divides hypervisors into two types based on where they run, and you need to recognize each from a description.
