Containers and virtual machines both let you run applications in isolated environments on shared hardware, but they work in different ways. Understanding the difference helps you choose the right tool and answer exam questions that describe one or the other. The short version: a VM (virtual machine) virtualizes hardware and runs a whole operating system, while a container virtualizes the operating system and runs just an application.
