Drift happens when real infrastructure no longer matches what Terraform last recorded. Someone edits a security group in the console, an autoscaling process changes a setting, or a resource is deleted by hand. Terraform does not watch your infrastructure continuously, so drift stays invisible until the next time Terraform checks.
