Terraform lets you write your own rules about what counts as valid input and valid infrastructure. These custom conditions turn assumptions that used to live in someone's head ("the instance type must be a t3 size", "the AMI must be for x86") into code that fails early with a clear message. Every custom condition has the same two parts: a condition expression that must evaluate to true, and an error_message that explains what went wrong in plain language.
