Security investigations do not happen in a legal vacuum. The same technical steps can produce useful evidence or a lawsuit against your employer depending on whether you had authority, followed policy and respected privacy law. As a practitioner you are not expected to be a lawyer, but you must know when to stop and involve legal counsel, human resources and management.
