Strong cryptographic algorithms are rarely broken head-on. Attackers instead look for ways around them: forcing systems to use weaker options, exploiting weaknesses in older hash functions, or taking advantage of the mathematics of probability. Security+ names three cryptographic attacks you should recognize: downgrade, collision and birthday attacks. Understanding them explains why old protocols and algorithms are retired, and why configuration matters as much as algorithm choice.
