Different workloads want different kernel and hardware settings. A database server benefits from settings favouring throughput, a laptop from power saving, and a virtual machine guest from settings suited to virtualised disks and CPUs. RHEL's tuned service applies sets of such settings, called profiles, so you do not have to adjust dozens of parameters by hand. Selecting a profile is an RHCSA objective.
