Groups let you grant permissions to several users at once: give a directory to a group and control membership instead of changing file permissions for each person. Local groups live in /etc/group, with group passwords and administrators in /etc/gshadow. On RHEL, each user also gets a private group of the same name, so shared access needs extra groups.
