Immutability: why item assignment fails

Strings in Python are immutable: once a string object is created, its contents can never change. You can read any character with indexing, but you cannot assign to an index or slice, and you cannot delete characters in place. Trying s[0] = 'J' raises TypeError: 'str' object does not support item assignment, and del s[0] raises a similar TypeError. The same applies to slice assignment such as s[1:3] = 'xy'.
