Input and output can fail for many reasons outside your program's control: the file does not exist, you lack permission, the disk is full. When an operating system call fails, Python raises OSError (or one of its subclasses), and the exception carries the operating system's error code in its errno attribute. Checking that code lets you respond precisely to what went wrong.
