The assert statement checks a condition that you, the programmer, believe must be true at a certain point. If the condition is true, nothing happens and execution continues. If it is false, Python raises AssertionError. Assertions are a debugging aid: they catch impossible states early, close to their cause, instead of letting bad data travel further and fail somewhere confusing.
