systemd manages almost everything that runs on a modern Linux system through units. A unit is a configuration object of a certain type, named by suffix: .service for daemons, .socket for socket activation, .timer for scheduled jobs, .mount for mounts, .target for groups of units, and more. systemctl is the tool you use to control them, and learning to separate 'now' from 'at boot' is the key to most exam questions.
