Storage problems are among the most common Linux incidents: services fail to start, logs stop being written, databases crash and users cannot save work. The symptoms often look alike, usually the error 'No space left on device', so you need a systematic way to find the real cause. Four situations cover most cases: a filesystem that is genuinely full, one that has run out of inodes, space held by deleted files that are still open, and a corrupted filesystem that needs repair.
