A process is a running instance of a program, identified by a PID (process ID) and owned by a user. Every process except PID 1 has a parent, recorded as its PPID (parent process ID). Monitoring and controlling processes is how you deal with runaway programs, prioritize work and keep long tasks running. Linux+ questions often give you ps or top output and ask what to do next.
