The Packet Forwarding Engine is the part of a Junos device that actually moves traffic. Where the Routing Engine thinks, the PFE acts. It receives packets on ingress interfaces, decides where each one goes using the forwarding table, applies any filters, policers and CoS, and sends it out the right interface, typically at line rate.
