A router's core job is to decide, for every packet, where to send it next. Junos makes that decision in two stages. The Routing Engine collects routes from all sources (directly connected interfaces, static configuration and routing protocols) into routing tables and picks the best route for each destination prefix. Those best routes are copied into the forwarding table, which the Packet Forwarding Engine (PFE) uses to forward packets at high speed.
