Many Junos commands produce long output. The routing table on an internet router can hold hundreds of thousands of routes, and show interfaces extensive on a single port fills several screens. The pipe symbol, |, lets you send a command's output through a filter so you only see what you need. It works in both operational and configuration mode, and you can chain several pipes together.
