An IPv4 address is 32 bits, written as four decimal octets such as 172.16.5.130. Part of it identifies the network and the rest identifies the host on that network. The subnet mask, or prefix length, says where that boundary is. You will type addresses with prefix lengths on every Junos interface (set interfaces ge-0/0/0 unit 0 family inet address 172.16.5.129/26), so subnetting has to become automatic.
