Translated messages often need values inserted into them, and the position of those values differs between languages. Concatenating strings in code, such as "Hello " + name + ", you have " + n + " messages", fixes the word order in the program and cannot be translated properly. java.text.MessageFormat solves this with patterns that contain numbered placeholders, so each translation can place the values wherever its grammar needs.
