Even with good provisioning and deprovisioning, access drifts. People change roles, projects end, emergency access is granted and never removed, and service accounts outlive the systems they supported. Periodic access reviews, also called access recertifications or entitlement reviews, are the detective control that catches this drift and brings access back in line with least privilege.
