Capital expenditure (CapEx) is money spent up front on long-lived assets, such as servers, storage arrays, network gear and buildings. The asset is recorded on the balance sheet and depreciated over several years. Operating expenditure (OpEx) is ongoing spending on day-to-day costs, such as rent, electricity, salaries and subscriptions, recorded as an expense in the period it is used.
