An application programming interface (API) is a defined way for one piece of software to request data or actions from another. When a mobile banking app shows your balance, it calls the bank's API; when an online shop shows shipping rates, it calls a carrier's API. APIs hide the complexity of the systems behind them and let those systems be reused in new ways.
