Disaster recovery (DR) is how you restore a service after a major event such as a regional outage, data corruption or ransomware. Two targets drive every DR decision. The recovery point objective (RPO) is the maximum amount of data loss, measured in time, that the business will accept: an RPO of 15 minutes means you must be able to recover data as it was no more than 15 minutes before the disaster. The recovery time objective (RTO) is the maximum acceptable time to get the service running again. Lower RPO and RTO cost more.
