Retention answers a simple question with complicated consequences: how long should we keep this? Keep data too briefly and you may break the law or lose information the business needs. Keep it too long and you increase breach exposure, storage cost and the volume of material that must be searched and produced in litigation. Good retention is a deliberate, documented decision made by data owners with legal advice, not an accident of storage capacity.
