PoE (Power over Ethernet) lets a network cable carry both data and DC electrical power to a device. Instead of running a separate power outlet to every ceiling access point, security camera or desk phone, the switch supplies power down the same Ethernet cable. This simplifies installation, allows devices to be placed where there is no outlet, and lets you power all those devices from a switch that can be protected by a UPS (uninterruptible power supply), keeping phones and cameras running during a power cut.
