NAT (Network Address Translation) is a function on a router or firewall that rewrites IP addresses in packets as they cross between an inside network and an outside network. Its main job is letting devices with private addresses communicate on the internet using public addresses. In NAT terminology, the inside local address is the host's private address and the inside global address is the public address it is translated to.
