Most wired LAN connections use UTP (unshielded twisted pair) copper cable: four pairs of wires, each pair twisted together to cancel electromagnetic interference, ending in RJ-45 connectors. STP (shielded twisted pair) adds foil or braided shielding for electrically noisy environments. Cables are rated in categories that indicate the frequencies and speeds they support.
