Keeping data too long creates risk and cost; deleting it too soon can break the law. Retention, deletion and archiving policies set the rules in between, and the cloud adds its own challenges: many copies in many services, storage that is cheap enough to tempt people to keep everything, and the inability to physically destroy the provider's media.
