The route processor CPU handles routing protocols, management sessions and any packet punted from the data plane. It has limited capacity, so a flood of traffic aimed at the device, whether from an attack, a misconfiguration or a loop, can overwhelm it and cause routing adjacencies to drop. Control Plane Policing (CoPP) protects the CPU by applying a QoS policy to traffic headed to the control plane, limiting each category of traffic to a safe rate.
