Local accounts on every device do not scale: adding or removing an administrator means touching hundreds of devices. AAA centralizes this. It stands for authentication (who are you), authorization (what may you do) and accounting (what did you do). Devices send AAA requests to a central server, such as Cisco ISE, which checks credentials against a directory and returns decisions, while logging activity.
