EtherChannel combines several parallel Ethernet links into one logical port-channel interface. It adds bandwidth, provides redundancy if a member fails, and, crucially, looks like a single link to spanning tree, so no member is blocked. Without it, STP (Spanning Tree Protocol) would block all but one of the parallel links, wasting the rest. You configure EtherChannel by putting physical interfaces into a channel group; IOS creates the matching interface port-channel automatically, and from then on you manage the bundle mostly through that logical interface. Both ends must be configured as a bundle; a channel on one switch facing ordinary independent ports on the other is a recipe for loops or dropped traffic.
