Modern apps are chains of services: a front end calls an API, which reads Cosmos DB, sends a Service Bus message and calls a model endpoint, and a worker picks up the message later. When a user reports a slow or failed request, you need to follow that one request across every hop. Distributed tracing does this by giving all the work for one operation a shared trace ID and linking each piece to its parent.
