An IP (Internet Protocol) address identifies a device on a network so traffic can reach it. Understanding the parts of an IP configuration lets you read the output of ipconfig on Windows or ip addr on Linux and quickly tell whether a device is set up correctly. The A+ exam relies on a small set of facts here: the two address formats, the private ranges, what an APIPA address means, and what the subnet mask and default gateway do.
